Life After the ICU: Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS)

Learning Objectives:
- Define post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) and describe its domains—cognitive, psychiatric and physical impairments—along with its prevalence among ICU survivors and their caregivers.
- Explore the clinical manifestations of PICS, including ICU-acquired weakness, neurocognitive impairments and psychiatric symptoms such as anxiety, depression and PTSD.
- Discuss evidence-based strategies to prevent and manage PICS during and after ICU stays, including early mobilization, minimizing sedation and post-ICU rehabilitation programs.
- Highlight ongoing research into biomarkers, innovative therapies and healthcare system adaptations aimed at improving long-term outcomes for PICS survivors and their families.
